Gut Health & The GI-MAP

Gut health is foundational. When things are not functioning optimally, we as doctors depend on labs to provide us with information we depend on to resolve this dis-ease. I’ve been excited about a new-to-me lab – the Gastrointestinal Microbial Assay Plus (GI-MAP) by Diagnostic Solutions. I’ll do my best to not make this too science-y…if you want that, then check out the white pages here.

The short story is they’re using a more accurate method for quantitatively detecting pathogens and they measure an impressively large spectrum of microorganisms including several viruses such as Cytomegalovirus and Epstein Barr Virus and a multitude of H. pylori virulence factors. Like most gastrointestinal labs I use, they include several markers of intestinal health including markers of digestion, immune response, leaky gut, and inflammation, but not as inclusive as Genova’s GI Effects lab. When evaluating for gut infection, which comes up more often than people may realize, the GI-MAP is my preferred lab – it has improved my ability to treat patients effectively.
